A half-hour later, Pree, Ollie, Jay, Gray, and I were wrist deep in the garden again, this time tucking cabbage, broccoli, and cauliflower plants into the ground. Back home, it would be too late to plant these, but all my consultations of the online gardening guides for this part of the UK assured me I could plant until late May and sometimes even into the summer.

The starts in the ground, we prepared a row and put peas in, and then while I still had help, we constructed a string trellis for the peas to grow up. Finally, we planted a square of spinach by scattering the seeds across the ground and then lightly raking over them.

As the five of us surveyed our work, I felt a swell of deep pleasure. The first round of garden was in, and I wasn’t even completely exhausted. Plus, I’d had the pleasure of a great day with friends and still had room for more veggies as the days got a bit warmer and longer.

“Thank you all so much,” I said. “I can offer you tea if you’d like.”

“No, thank you,” Ollie said. “I’m ready for some telly and a lay down. See you soon, though.”

Jay waved, and Pree thanked me before catching up to Ollie and telling him he could bring the feather by her surgery on Monday if he’d like.

Gray took my dirty hand and walked with me over to the donkey paddock, where the three girls stared at us expectantly. “I didn’t bring any apples,” I said and swore I saw Clover sneer at me with my wide lips.

“Ah, but we always have a secret stash of goodies, don’t we, ladies?” Gray said as he reached into a box that I had thought was a birdhouse and pulled out a handful of animal crackers.

“They eat animal crackers?” I said with a laugh.

“They like the elephants best, but they’ll tolerate the others.” He dropped a handful into my palm. “Here you go.”

For a few moments, I felt the gentle, slightly gooey nuzzle of donkey muzzle on my hands, and then Gray and I unhooked Dante and headed inside for a cuppa.
